Emma and Clueless -
Transforming Jane Austen

Introduction

Information, interpretation, questionnaires and resources on the subject of Transformations for the benefit of HSC students in the HSC Stage 6 English Advanced course studying the transformation of a Jane Austen text to a modern movie.  The works to be studied are:

  • Austen, Jane, Emma, Oxford University Press, 1980 or Penguin Books, 1985 and

  • Amy Heckerling, Clueless, CIC, 1995

In looking at the subject of ‘Transformation’ you must consider the ways in which transformations generate reflections on the texts, contexts and the ways in which texts can be transformed.

By juxtaposing a literary text such as Emma with a commercial product such as Clueless, this elective allows you to explore how context can influence your own reading practices.

NOTE: While these texts and resources have been made available to us for the benefit of students and teachers, by the courtesy and goodwill of their authors and publishers, students are reminded that copying text without acknowledgement of its author and source constitutes plagiarism, which is not tolerated by the HSC examiners, and is considerably frowned upon in schools.
