Paul Theroux’s Riding the Red Rooster about his travels by train all over China some time ago includes this incident: Theroux engaged a taxi-driver for a long-distance drive (to Tibet) and conversed with him quite a bit. One day out of the blue this chap suddenly pronounced, ‘It is a truth universally acknowledged ...’. Well, we know what comes next. ‘So you’ve read Jane Austen then?’ Theroux asked. ‘Oh yes, Pride & Prejudice is my favourite book,’ said his Chinese taxi-driver.
