Paul Vernor (Sydney Morning Herald)

From Big Questions, 'Spectrum', Sydney Morning Herald, 6 April 2003

Q: If sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, what is the highest?

A: Shakespeare plumped for brevity, Maugham claimed it was impropriety, while Wilde went wild with the epigram. The highest form is irony. One needs to be a highly refined stylist like Jane Austen to say one thing while meaning another. Yet what is irony but sophisticated sarcasm? Paul Vernor, Port Macquarie
