Austen citing:
Rudyard Kipling

In 1915 Rudyard Kipling and his wife had a holiday in Bath. While his wife took the waters at the Bath Spa Hotel, Rudyard re-read the works of Jane Austen, and got the idea for his 1924 story The Janeites. His 1915 comment on JA however, was this:

When she looks straight at a man or a woman, she is greater than those who were alive with her – by a whole head: greater than Charles (Dickens): greater than Walter (Scott) – with a more delicate hand and cleaner scalpel.
