Way back in November 1989, Column 8 reported a story about a woman catching a late night train. She became uneasy at finding herself left alone in a carriage with a scruffy, surly-looking adolescent, until he pulled out and began to read a copy of Pride and Prejudice – at which point she relaxed completely!
